Will tennis star Rafael Nadal represent PokerStars in the future?
The Spanish poker site PokerGenio claims to have information that confirms Nadal has signed a 2-year contract with PokerStars worth €12,000,000.
PokerStars sponsors a lot of stars from the world of sports eg. former German tennis pro Boris Becker, Frech rugby star Sebastien Chabal and Dutch field hockey icon Fatima Moreira De Melo.
And if you're to believe Spanish poker site PokerGenio the next name on the list of poker-playing sport stars is former World No. 1, current No. 2 Rafael Nadal.
The rumor is that 25-year-old Nadal has signed up for 2 years for a fee of no less than €12,000,000.
According to PokerGenio the only hindrance right now for this deal to go through is the tax issue that PokerStars is facing right now in Spain.
For PokerStars to receive an egaming license in Spain they've been ordered to pay taxes on their profits for the period 2008 to 2012.
The amount owed by PokerStars is huge: $257,000,000! And they're yet to comment on whether they're paying up or leaving the Iberian peninsula.
Initially the deal for all prospective operators was that they were to pay a profit tax of 25% from the 1st of June 2012 - but two weeks ago the Spanish authorities changed the terms and demanded payment going back to 2012 too.
Both SportingBet and bwin.party have paid the back-taxes - after getting really big reductions on their bills.
So perhaps we're all just waiting to see what kind of reduction PokerStars can get from the Spanish tax man?
